I listen exclusively to Christian music and keeping God’s word and praise in my brain. I know you can find good music in other genres. In fact, many Christians record in other genres because it gives them a way to share their faith. But songs get stuck in my head, and I prefer to have the message of Christian music rolling around in there.
That being said, every now and then, a song plays that bothers me a bit. I hate to complain too much because these tunes generally have decent lyrics. Still, I end up getting hung up on one or two lines. Most recently, Tauren Wells’ “Famous For” stopped me.
You’ll find amazing Biblical facts in the lyrics; however, I wonder if the truth of the words makes our Creator sad. The song boasts many things our heavenly Father is famous for–things like shutting the mouths of lions and bringing dry bones to life. And while I love the stories behind those extraordinary works, does God truly want to be famous for miracles and His tremendous power?
It’s obviously just my opinion, but I believe Yahweh wants to be known for His mercy and His love. The most important aspect of the Almighty is the fact He made a way for our sins to be forgiven and defeated death, hell, and the grave with the resurrection. I believe God wants to be most famous for the gracious sacrifice of His Son, His willingness to accept everyone regardless of their past, and way He separates us from our sin.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:11-12If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Romans 8:31
I don’t want to dismiss the Red Sea crossing or Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego walking out of that fiery furnace. But without the cross, the resurrection, and the gift of the Holy Spirit, would anyone outside the Jewish faith know about those other marvelous acts? Not to mention the number of people who miss out on salvation because they focus on God’s magnificent and glorious works. Others become fascinated with the mysteries of Revelation and worry so much about the second coming of Christ they won’t be ready for it when He comes.
I pray that in your life, Christ will be most famous for the way He redeemed you and gave you new life. After that, I hope you experience all the power, beauty, and marvelous might of your Creator. Let’s make Him famous!
To honor the songwriters’ copyright, I won’t include the lyrics here, but you can listen to the song on YouTube:
