Whatsoever Is True

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you’ll be able to test and approve God’s perfect and pleasing will.
Romans 12:2

I wonder if God put butterflies on the Earth to show humans what being transformed really looks like. From creepy caterpillars to fabulous fluttering, those insects show us our potential.

Sadly, most people don’t believe humans have the capacity to make such a major change. We doubt it for ourselves and think it nearly impossible for those who’ve been the worst among us. But if the Bible tells us to do it, it must be possible.

For years I’ve pondered Philippians 4:8

Whatsoever is true, whatsoever is noble, whatsoever is right, whatsoever is pure, whatsoever is lovely, whatsoever is admirable—if you find anything excellent or praiseworthy–think on these things.

And I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the answer to transforming your mind. When we train our minds to focus on these whatsoevers, we naturally produce new neural pathways.

How would your life change if you grabbed a notebook and record three whatsoevers every day?

Start with the Truth

I think there’s a reason Paul listed Truth first. Most problems in life stem from humans neglecting to focus on the truth. We build on false perspectives and interpret situations according to our past instead of the big picture. We process through the lens of experience and position instead of reason and reality.

Our thinking shapes us. It defines our identity. Built on falsehood, everything quickly becomes unstable. Fixed on the truth of who we are, it becomes a foundation ready for the rest of our life.

Jesus said,

“The truth will set you free.”
–John 8:32

and In the beginning God gave us a truth that should transform the way we look at ourselves. He said he would create all humans in his image. Right there in Genesis 1:26-27, He made it clear: your spirit looks like His Spirit.

And in Psalm 139:14 King David reminded us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Scripture is filled with truths that should guide our lives and shape our thoughts.

When we begin to focus on the truth, we start to see ourselves and others differently. It’s the first step in the transformation process.

God doesn’t want us to stay in the caterpillar state forever. He said we were made to be free. So, start embracing the whatsoever of truth and be transformed as they renew your mind.
