Praising God with Most of my Heart

1 I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonders.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
Psalm 9:1-2

Most folks have heard the beginning of Psalm 9 before. Many composers have used these verses as their song’s driving force. With their catchy tunes, we sing the words without much thought. And we should sing it. King David meant for it to be sung, though the title of the tune he used, “Death of a Son,” leaves me a bit baffled.

I love music, but I have to admit, I hate how easy it is to sing a song and not really think about the words. This one, in particular, would lead a listener to believe we have devoted ourselves completely to Yahweh. After all, it begins with “all my heart.” However, do we really lift adoration to God with every fiber of our being?

Today, the outside temperature is eighty-eight degrees. The sun shines unhindered by clouds. But I know the Creator will hear complaints regarding the temperature and humidity, and some will come from very dedicated Christ followers.

Don’t get me wrong, I complain about the weather. You’ll hear more from me in the winter than the summer, and when the rain goes on for days and days, I try to remember it’s still not as bad as Noah when I get ready to vent.

But how does all that complaining fit with Psalm 9?

It’s difficult to praise every moment of the day; however, I’ve discovered the more I exalt the Lord, the more joy I experience. Giving God glory brings me peace, it seems to set me on the right path and help me stay focused on what’s truly important.

Psalm 9 reminds me to maintain an attitude of praise and make sure when I sing a song I mean every word!
